Andar Bahar is one of the oldest card games in South Asia and one of the quickest to learn. The whole round hangs on a single card, usually called the joker, which has nothing to do with the joker in a pack. Once you know its job, the game reads like a simple race. Here is what it does and what to watch for.

What the joker card is

At the start of a round, the dealer turns up one card and places it in the middle. That card is called the joker, or sometimes the main card. It is not a wild card. Its only role is to set the rank that both sides are chasing. If the joker is a seven, the round ends when another seven appears.

This is different from the joker in a standard deck. Most live tables use a pack without printed jokers.

How the round plays out

Players bet on Andar (inside) or Bahar (outside) before the dealer deals. Then cards are placed alternately, one on Andar and one on Bahar, until a card matches the joker's rank. The side that receives the match wins. The first card dealt usually goes to one side by rule, which gives that side a tiny edge, and tables adjust payouts to compensate.

Because only the matching card matters, there is no strategy in the usual sense. The cards are random and so is the order.

Speed is the other feature of the game. A round can finish in under a minute, so a session that feels short can include many bets. Count your rounds as well as your money. Ten rounds at a modest stake is not the same spend as fifty rounds, even if each bet seems small. Setting a round limit, such as stopping after a fixed number, is one way to slow yourself down.

  • Joker card is turned up first.
  • Bets are placed on Andar or Bahar.
  • Cards alternate until a match for the joker appears.
  • The side with the match wins.

Why payouts differ

In many versions, Andar and Bahar do not pay the same. The side that receives the first card often has a slightly shorter payout, or the other side pays a bonus on certain outcomes. You will find the exact numbers in the table's rules screen. We did not record BDBAJEE's Andar Bahar rules when we checked on 7 November 2026, so read them on the table.

Side bets and patterns

Many live versions add side bets, such as which round number the match will land on, or which suit the joker will be. These pay more and win less. Read the paytable line by line before you stake.

Scoreboards show recent results, and it is tempting to read them like a map. They are not. Each round is independent, and a long run on Andar does not mean Bahar is due. See the illusion of control for why patterns feel real.

Some tables show a card history and statistics on the side. These are for entertainment. The cards are shuffled and dealt by the game, and the history cannot tell you what is coming next. If a screen shows that Andar has won more times than Bahar, that is all it is: a count of what has already happened.

How to play it sensibly

Choose a flat stake and a session limit before you open the table. Avoid doubling after a loss. Rounds are quick, so the clock runs faster than you notice. Our page on Andar Bahar covers rules and bets, and the live casino hub links to the other games.

If you play at a table with a human dealer, the same rules apply. The dealer follows a fixed procedure and does not choose the cards. Watch the dealing for a few rounds before placing a bet, and read any rule pop-ups on the table screen. If you ever feel the table is moving too fast, you can sit out a round at no cost.

Common mistakes

The first is believing the joker card affects the next round. It does not. The second is chasing a loss with bigger side bets. The third is playing without reading the table rules. All three are easy to avoid, and none needs a system, only patience.

Remember also that live tables are streamed, so the cards you see are the cards in play. The only variable you control is your stake.

A last point: Andar Bahar is easy to explain, which makes it easy to underestimate. Because there is nothing to decide, the only protection you have is your own limit. Write it down before you start, and stop when it is reached.
