Penalty shootouts produce the most dramatic minutes in football and some of the most confusing slips. Many bettors discover after a cup tie that their bet on the winner lost, because the match ended level after normal time and the shootout does not count. This guide explains how the markets are separated.

Why your bet may not count

The classic match result bet settles on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties are usually excluded. So if the match ends 1-1 and a team wins on penalties, a bet on either team to win loses, and a bet on the draw wins. That is the rule in most books, though you should confirm it.

It surprises people every cup season. The fix is to read the market name and rules line before staking.

A worked example with invented figures: a team has a ৳500 bet at 3.00 for a home win in a cup tie that finishes 1-1. The home side then wins on penalties. The match result bet still loses, since the 90-minute score was a draw. A ৳500 bet on that team to qualify at 1.80, on the other hand, returns ৳900.

Markets that include a shootout

Markets such as to qualify, to win the tie or to lift the trophy include extra time and penalties. If you want to bet on who goes through, use those. Some books also offer a market on whether a match will go to penalties.

Check the competition rules too. Some cups use replays or a golden goal rather than penalties, and some two-leg ties apply away goals or other rules. Your market should state which applies. If it does not, ask support before staking.

  • Match result: usually 90 minutes only.
  • To qualify: includes extra time and penalties.
  • Will there be a shootout: yes or no.
  • Penalty scored or missed: a specific kick.

Is a shootout random?

It is close to it. The kicker has a strong advantage, but goalkeepers guess well enough to make the contest roughly even. Studies of the first kick suggest a small edge for the side that goes first, but not enough to build a system on. Pressure, fatigue and luck all play a part.

Prices for shootout outcomes are therefore close to even, with margins. They are a poor place to find value.

Goalkeeper research is tempting, with videos of saves and kick direction. It can give a small edge to the kicker or goalkeeper in the real contest, but the odds already reflect it. For a bettor with no inside information, it is not a lever.

Live markets in a shootout

Some books offer in-play bets on each kick. These move quickly and rely on stream timing. If your stream is behind the price feed, you are acting on old information. Our guide to live betting explains suspension and delays.

Remember the stream delay. A kick that has already been taken may still be on its way to your screen. In-play bets on single kicks are risky for that reason alone. If the market is still open, ask yourself why.

How to approach cup ties

Think about what you actually want to bet on: the 90 minutes, the tie or the trophy. Pick the market that matches. Read the rules line and the settlement notes. For general football bets, see football betting, and for pricing see betting odds.

Keep emotion out of it

Shootouts are tense, and tension encourages impulse bets. Decide before the match whether you will bet at all in extra time and penalties. If you have not made that decision, skip it. A fixed budget helps you stay calm.

Last, tie markets are a good moment to review your session. If you have already lost your budget, a dramatic ending is not a reason to add to it. Stop and watch the match instead.
